Impromptu Gatherings

Am I the only one that wonders what, exactly, I am good at? Or maybe what I’m good for? On some level, I’m pretty good at my job. I like teaching math, especially to kids that struggle with it. I think I’m a pretty good Mom, although I’m not Mother of the Year material. I think I’ve finally figured out what I’m good at. To give credit where credit is due, Travis and I are good at impromptu gatherings! We can pull off the unplanned grouping of people at our house. Just last night, We ended up with seven (plus Baby Dean) at the house and managed an evening of fun including boat time, dinner, and cards. Since Trent and Juliana’s air conditioning is not working, I ended up having them overnight too. We already have Tessa and her friend from medical school, so we have a house full.

So this is our secret skill. Travis and I can usually pull this off fairly efficiently. Sometimes, like last night, we make food. Sometimes, we order. After Trent and Juliana’s baby shower, we ended up with 20 or so people at our house. No problem. We brought out the shower leftovers, added some extras, and dinner was served.

There are caveats, like the attendees can’t be too picky about the house. We will grab things sitting in the entranceway and toss them in our bedroom, and sweep papers off a random countertop, but there is a limit to the amount of adjustments we can make on the fly. As long as everyone understands that it was not a planned event, we can all have a good time.

Honestly, it removes the stress of planning. When you’re planning something, you feel like everything must be perfect. The stress goes on and on. That is not the case with impromptu events. With impromptu, we are all appreciative for a place to gather. And isn’t that the whole point? So, feel free to stop by. We need thirty minutes warning to hide our crazy! Then we’re good to go! I must admit, you may not want to be in the house for those 30 minutes, because it is frenetic and may include screaming and bossing and pointing. But nobody would know any of that later. Once the door opens, we are a loving, happy family… not the screaming mess that is trying to hide 25 pairs of shoes that were on the entryway floor one minute earlier.

Have a great week everyone! And share your secret skill!
